With winter storms that can take out power lines and leave people stranded for days without phone service, AT&T has made preparations to weather the storm, should it arrive.

Experts are already calling for this to be a much colder than average winter, increasing the likelihood that there will be emergency situations where the mobile phone is the only communication tool.

AT&T has increased and improved their wireless network in western and central New York, the southern tier and the Capital region with more backup generators and an improved response time in critical situations.Keeping their network connected is their goal and their promise.

In addition to the typical preparations and improvements, AT&T expanded their 3G service area network to cover even more of New York. With many customers relying on AT&T for their voice, data, and video communications, AT&T’s 24/7 commitment becomes even more important to honor.

Preparations

AT&T’s winter storm preparations include:

  • Adding more capacity to the network to handle an increase in call volume.
  • Testing and make sure all backup batteries are functional at every cell site.
  • Following a backup power plan which includes using extended life batteries, portable generators, and maintaining the existing stationary generators.
  • Staging mobile cell sites and portable generators in secure locations for rapid response time should they be needed.
  • Making sure generators have been filled to capacity with fuel at all cell sites and switiching facilities.

In addition to making preparations for their own readiness, AT&T is helping to spread the word that people need to be prepared as well with their own plans. Their advice includes:

  • Having a family plan for communication and make sure the entire family knows the plan.
  • Using text messages instead of voice. Text messages tend to go through quicker due to requiring less network resources.
  • Don’t use the phone during emergency situations unless it is an emergency.
  • Pre-program all emergency numbers and contact emails - this includes police, fire and EMS as well as family.
  • Keep your phone charged at all times.
  • Use your phone to take property damage photos, you might not be able to access your digital camera.

AT&T is preparing themselves and their customers in the event of an emergency that leaves them without power. Following their guidelines and knowing they are on the job during any downtime should make power outages and emergency situations easier to survive. AT&T is ready to weather the storm no matter what it might be.
